With last week’s release of the Marvel Avenger’s Hawkeye DLC “Operation: Future Imperfect”, there has been a huge jump in the number of gamers currently playing the superhero sim.
According to the latest data plucked from SteamCharts, Marvel’s Avengers has seen its active player base increase by almost five times on PC. Since launching last September, the game’s community rapidly began to shrink – in the days before Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics dropped their Hawkeye DLC, Marvel’s Avengers witnessed a peak player count of around 550 which rose to around 2,600, now sitting at 2,100 in the past twenty four hours.
It’s definitely an improvement for Earth’s mightiest heroes though, as pointed out by Forbes, Marvel’s Avengers is still lagging behind its chief competitors in the live games crucible with Warframe and Destiny peaking at 74,000 and 71,000 respectively.
Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics have yet to release any official numbers themselves and it’s likely they won’t unless Operation: Future Imperfect has somehow performed incredibly across other platforms. That said, compared to PC and Steam, it’s probable that Marvel’s Avengers has seen a great uptick in players on consoles following the big Hawkeye update.
This is mainly thanks to the free PS5 upgrade for those who previously owned the game on PlayStation 4, the same upgrade being offered to those on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. As promised the next generation upgrade improves framerate and loading times with higher resolution textures and others features such as cross-gen matchmaking as DualSense haptic feedback.
Having spent the weekend playing Marvel’s Avengers on PS5, we reviewed Operation: Future Imperfect expansion. While thoroughly impressed with the addition of Hawkeye as a playable character, there are still some root issues holding the game back.
Last week, Crystal Dynamics announced their 2021 roadmap for Marvel’s Avengers. Of course, the headline from this developer update was the War for Wakanda DLC reveal which will add Black Panther as well as a new environment, enemy faction, villain, and more. Between now and then there’s plenty of content to keep fans coming back month after month.
