This September, CFC alumni made waves for their work at TIFF 21, where films like Wildhood, Quickening, All My Puny Sorrows, Learn to Swim, and more made headlines and earned critical acclaim. Additionally, the nominees for the 2021 DGC Awards were announced and revealed a long list of alumni projects. As summer comes to an end, CFC alumni are showing no signs of slowing down as they head into fall with new announcements, projects and festival appearances.

CFC alumni earned 20 nominations for this year’s awards, which will be handed out virtually on October 23, 2021TIFF Awards

  • Danis Goulet was the recipient of this year’s TIFF Emerging Talent Award

October 1-11, 2021

A number of alumni films are playing at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival, including:

  • Night Raiders, from writer/director Danis Goulet, starring Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, from producer Paul Barkin, executive producer Kyle Irving, and edited by Jorge Weisz
  • Tyler Levine is a producer on All My Puny Sorrows, the adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel, co-edited by Orlee Buium
  • Handle With Care: The Legend of the Notic Streetball Crew, co-directed by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux
  • Learn to Swim, from director/co-writer Thyrone Tommy, co-writer Marni Van Dyk, producer Alona Metzer, associate producers Lindsay Blair Goeldner and Mark Andrew Sirju, executive producer Matt Code, editors Baun Mah and Shaun Rykiss, starring Thomas Antony Olajide, with music editing by Simon Poole and original songs by TiKA and Casey MQ
  • Quickening, the debut feature from writer-director Haya Waseem, with music by composer Spencer Creaghan
  • See for Me, from director Randall Okita
  • Wildhood, from writer-director Bretten Hannam, produced by Gharrett Patrick Paon, executive produced by Damon D’Oliveira, edited by Shaun Rykiss, featuring Joel Thomas Hynes, with music by composer Neil Haverty
  • The Horses(short), from director Liz Cairns
  • Things We Feel but Do Not Say (short), from director Lauren Grant
  • Without You, from director Mina Shum

October 19-24, 2021

The following alumni films are part of the 2021 imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival

  • Night Raiders, from writer/director Danis Goulet, starring Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, from producer Paul Barkin, executive producer Kyle Irving, and edited by Jorge Weisz
  • Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy, from director/writer/producer Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, and producer Lori Lozinski
  • Beans (drive in), from co-writer/director Tracey Deer and co-writer Meredith Vuchnich
  • Run Woman Run from director CFC/ Netflix Project Development Accelerator participant Zoe Hopkins and producer Paula Devonshire
  • Devery Jacobs will participate in a Reservations Dogs panel as part of Industry Days
  • Jennifer Podemski (The Shine Network) will participate in the Nia Tero Kin Theory Panel as part of Industry Days

  • Sort Of, a refreshing comedy about a young gender-fluid caregiver, whose life plans are disrupted when tragedy strikes the family they help to maintain, featuring episodes directed by Renuka Jeyapalan, writing by Jenn Engels, produced by Jennifer Kawaja and starring Supinder Wraich is available to stream on CBC Gem as of October 5
  • Aaron Martin has two series premiering this fall. Season 4 of Slasher will premiere on Hollywood Suite on October 4, 2021. Season 2 of Another Life will premiere on Netflix on October 14, 2021
  • Virginia Abramovich’s film Between Waves is available on Apple TV and the Cineplex Store in Canada and in the U.S. and on iTunes in the UK
  • Reservation Dogs, starring Actors Conservatory alum Devery Jacobs, is available to stream on FX on Hulu
